Mary Poppins Returns was as wondrously whimsical as it’s 1964 predecessor!
All the songs and dances were brilliant- particularly ‘Trip A Little Light Fantastic’, performed by Lin Manuel. Miranda’s answer to Bert and his army of ‘Leeries’.
Dick Van Dyke’s cameo was the perfect throwback to the first film, and the nonagenarian’s dancing is guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Super fans will definitely appreciate the book references carefully weaved into the plot, such as Meryl Streep’s character who’s a clear reference to Topsy Turvey.
The trip to the Royal Dalton Bowl was a definite highlight. The careful weaving of drawn animation and real people is comparable to the penguin dance of the first film- and the use of clinking china sound effects was the perfect little detail.
The humour was enjoyable for kids but the film is enjoyable for all- reflected in the U rating. We loved it and would recommend going with your whole family!
