I’m still on a high from seeing this film, and felt as if I was in a live musical, singing and laughing along with the audience.
The film reunites the all-star cast including Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep for another round of sparkly fun and ABBA favourites. Lily James, Cher and Andy Garcia join the line-up for round two and it’s made clear pretty early on where the older Donna has got to. It’s guaranteed to leave some tears in your eyes.
My favourite scenes were the flashbacks (played by Lily James) she was the lead singer and gives a fantastic performance with the choreography, production numbers and cinematography. Meanwhile in the present, Amanda Seyfried’s Sophie is striving to fulfill her mother’s vision (she had a dream!) with the newly renovated Hotel Bella Donna, while wrestling with the prospect of history repeating itself on this idyllic island.
The film sees the original cast re-join and you can’t help but toe-tap throughout the Abba singalong, with every song you remember (“Waterloo”, “Dancing Queen”, “Super Trouper”) and several you don’t. The film finishes on a high, with Cher singing ‘Fernando’ranking this is one of my favourite best movie musicals.
